What is a Hallmark?
It is a series of marks, collectively known as Hallmarks, authorised by enactment's of Dail Eireann, stamped on articles manufactured from gold, silver and platinum, after the articles have been tested and found to be of the legal standard of purity.

Where is testing carried out?
By Irish Law the standard of most gold, silver and platinum articles must be tested (known as assaying) at the Assay Office of the Company of Goldsmiths of Dublin. This testing is carried out at Dublin Castle. The legal standard of purity having been established, the articles are stamped with a series of marks, i.e. Hallmarks, by the Assay Office.

Some times marks like 9ct, 14ct, 18ct, 22ct or Sterling Silver are stamped on articles, what do they mean?
They have no value whatever as they could be stamped by anybody on anything. Only the Hallmark is a Guarantee of Purity.
